About 413 Services

What is 413 Services?

413 Services LLC is a locally owned tree service based in Piedmont, South Dakota, serving Rapid City and the Black Hills. We handle tree removal, tree trimming and pruning, stump grinding, storm cleanup, fire mitigation, land clearing, and right-of-way vegetation management for homeowners, businesses, and rural landowners. The company has been in business since 2022.

Who owns 413 Services?

413 Services is owned and run by Jeb Bordewyk, a Rapid City native. Before starting the company in 2022, Jeb spent 17 years as a lineman with the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA), so he brings years of experience working safely at height and around power lines. He also holds a business administration degree from Black Hills State University.

Where does the name “413” come from?

The name comes from Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That verse is at the heart of how Jeb runs the business, with honest estimates, hard work, and respect for every property we step onto.

What areas does 413 Services serve?

We serve Rapid City and communities across the Black Hills of western South Dakota, including Piedmont, Box Elder, Black Hawk, Summerset, Hermosa, Keystone, Hill City, Custer, Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead, and Hot Springs. We work throughout Pennington, Meade, and Lawrence Counties. If you’re nearby and not sure we cover your area, give us a call.

Is 413 Services licensed and insured?

Yes. 413 Services is fully licensed and insured. Tree work carries real risk to people and property, so we recommend asking any tree company for proof of insurance before work begins, and we’re happy to provide ours.

What are your business hours?

We’re available Monday through Friday from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Saturdays by appointment. We’re closed on Sundays. For storm damage or a tree that’s an immediate hazard, call 605-484-8943.

Tree Removal and Stump Grinding

How much does tree removal cost in Rapid City?

Tree removal cost depends on the tree’s size, species, condition, and location. A small tree in an open yard costs far less than a large ponderosa pine leaning over a house or growing near power lines. Access for equipment, whether climbing and rigging are needed, stump grinding, and debris hauling also affect the price. 413 Services gives free on-site estimates with transparent pricing, so you’ll know the full cost before any work starts.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Every estimate from 413 Services is free, on site, and comes with no obligation. We walk the property with you, look at the trees in question, and give you a clear price with no surprise costs later.

Do you offer emergency tree removal?

Yes. 413 Services provides emergency tree removal and storm cleanup in Rapid City and the Black Hills. If a tree has fallen on your home, vehicle, fence, or driveway, or a damaged tree looks ready to come down, call 605-484-8943. If a tree is touching a power line, stay well away from it and call your electric utility first.

Can you remove a tree that’s close to my house or power lines?

Yes. We use professional climbing and rigging techniques to take trees down in sections when there isn’t room to drop them whole, which protects your home, roof, fences, and landscaping. Jeb’s 17 years as a utility lineman mean he knows how to work carefully near lines. Trees in direct contact with energized power lines need to be handled with your utility company first.

Is cleanup included with tree removal?

Yes. Complete site cleanup is included with every 413 Services project. We haul away branches, limbs, and debris so your yard is left clean when we leave. If you’d like to keep the wood for firewood, bring it up during your estimate.

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding uses a machine to grind the stump down below ground level, leaving wood chips you can use as mulch or have hauled away. Stump removal pulls out the stump and much of the root ball, which is more disruptive and usually only needed for construction or major regrading. For most yards, grinding is the faster, cleaner choice. 413 Services offers both, leaving the area smooth and ready for new landscaping.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Rapid City?

Trees on your own private property usually don’t need a permit, but trees in the public right-of-way, such as boulevard trees between the sidewalk and street, may be regulated by the city. HOA rules can also apply in some neighborhoods. Check with the City of Rapid City or your HOA before removal, and we’re glad to help you figure out what applies to your property.

Tree Trimming and Pruning

When is the best time to trim trees in the Black Hills?

For most trees, late fall through late winter is the best time to trim, while trees are dormant. Pruning then is easier on the tree, and without leaves it’s easier to see the branch structure. For ponderosa pines, avoiding heavy pruning during the warm months helps reduce the chance of attracting bark beetles to fresh cuts. Dead, broken, or hazardous branches should be removed any time of year.

How often should my trees be trimmed?

Most mature trees benefit from trimming every three to five years, while younger trees may need lighter pruning more often to develop good structure. Trees close to your home, roof, driveway, or power lines may need more frequent attention. During your free estimate, we’ll look at your trees and suggest a schedule that fits them.

Why should I have my trees trimmed?

Regular trimming removes dead and overhanging branches, lowers the risk of limbs breaking in wind and snow storms, and lets more light and air through the canopy for healthier growth. In the Black Hills, removing low branches also reduces wildfire risk by keeping a ground fire from climbing into the tree.

Do you plant trees?

Yes. 413 Services offers tree planting, including help choosing species that are suited to the Black Hills climate and soil and planting them with proper technique so they establish well.

Fire Mitigation and Defensible Space

What is fire mitigation?

Fire mitigation is the work of reducing the fuel load around your home and property to slow the spread of wildfire and improve your chances of protecting your structures. At 413 Services, that includes thinning overcrowded trees, removing low branches and brush that act as ladder fuels, taking out dead and dying trees, and clearing fallen debris while keeping healthy trees standing.

How much defensible space do I need around my home?

Most wildfire agencies recommend at least 100 feet of defensible space around your home, and larger or steeper properties may need more. That space is usually treated in three zones: 0 to 5 feet from the house kept as fire resistant as possible, 5 to 30 feet with reduced fuel and pruned, thinned trees, and 30 to 100 feet or more where forest density is reduced to break up continuous fuel.

Why is wildfire risk so high in the Black Hills?

The Black Hills combine dense ponderosa pine forests, extended dry periods, high winds, beetle-killed trees, and heavy buildup of dead vegetation. Together, those conditions let fire spread quickly, which is why many homeowners here invest in thinning and defensible space.

Can fire mitigation help with my homeowners insurance?

It can. Many local jurisdictions and insurance providers now recommend or require defensible space around structures in fire-prone areas. Requirements vary by insurer, so check with your agent about what they need to see. If your insurer has asked for mitigation work, share their requirements with us and we’ll plan the work around them.

Do you remove pine beetle-killed trees?

Yes. Dead, dying, and diseased trees, including pines killed by bark beetles, ignite quickly and burn intensely, and they can become hazards as they dry out and weaken. 413 Services removes these trees as part of fire mitigation and hazard tree removal. Signs of beetle activity include small pitch tubes or sap spots on the bark, reddish boring dust, and needles fading to red.

Land Clearing and Right-of-Way Services

What does land clearing include?

Land clearing from 413 Services removes trees of all sizes, brush, stumps, fallen timber, and debris. We process the material on site and haul away the debris so your lot is clear when we leave. It’s used for new construction site prep, agricultural land improvement, rural property reclamation, fire mitigation, and getting property ready to sell.

What are right-of-way services?

Right-of-way services keep vegetation cleared along roads, railroads, and powerline corridors. Overgrown trees and brush can block sightlines, interfere with powerlines, obstruct rail signals, and raise fire risk. 413 Services provides tree removal, clearing, and ongoing vegetation management along rights-of-way in the Rapid City area and Black Hills.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. Along with residential work, 413 Services handles commercial tree services, land clearing, and right-of-way vegetation management for businesses, developers, landowners, and organizations responsible for road, rail, or utility corridors.
